When is the invasion of pain
After easing Naruto's fears that he couldn't change the world, Minato repaired the seal and sent Naruto back to finish his battle with Pain. With the Nine-Tails' chakra suppressed, Naruto and Pain resumed their battle, with Naruto tricking Pain into using a Shinra Tensei on dozens of shadow clones , giving Naruto enough time to strike him with a Rasengan during the five second window. The last body of Pain was defeated, and Naruto used its black receivers to track down and confront Nagato himself.
Having reached the makeshift tree, Naruto asked Nagato why he hated Konoha, and what had made him the way he was. Nagato, still wanting to know Naruto's reply to his question, answered with two stories. The first was how his parents were killed during the Second Shinobi World War , which led to the activation of his Rinnegan. The second he began with how he met his friends Konan and Yahiko , the boy whose body would later become the Deva Path. Yahiko had revealed to the small makeshift family that he wanted to rule the world, to stop the world's wars.
Nagato then revealed how Yahiko approached Jiraiya to ask him to train himself, Nagato and Konan to be ninja. During the training, Nagato had used the Rinnegan to save Yahiko. Seeing this, Jiraiya told Nagato about the time of never-ending wars, when a "messiah", the Sage of the Six Paths , appeared, and spread his religion across the world, which came to be the ninja techniques that the shinobi used today.
Jiraiya thought the Sage had been "reborn" as Nagato, and entrusted him to find the "answer" and spread peace in the world, before leaving the three orphans. Years later, the three formed a gang in Amegakure, led by Yahiko, to abolish wars and bring peace to the world. He threw a kunai in Nagato's direction, and ordered him to kill Yahiko.
Yahiko agreed to die, but Nagato refused to kill him. Seeing this, Yahiko forcibly held Nagato's hand with the kunai and slit his own throat with it. A dying Yahiko told Nagato that he had to live, as he was the "messiah". Nagato told Naruto that Yahiko's death was the second great source of pain for him.
He ultimately summoned a large, animated statue for battle, which imbued several chakra rods from its body into Nagato's back in order to use the latter's chakra. Nagato told Naruto that he had become the leader of their gang, and had carried on Yahiko's agenda to bring peace to the world. After hearing Nagato's story, Naruto reflected on everything he had heard.
Naruto agreed that some of the things Nagato mentioned were true, but he also said that Jiraiya had believed in him, and that he would believe in what Jiraiya had believed in, and that was why he would not kill Nagato. Nagato questioned this, and Naruto pulled out the book that Jiraiya had written. He began reading from it, and told Nagato the main character's name was Naruto.
Naruto then said that he would become Hokage, and he promised peace for Amegakure as well. Nagato then stated that Naruto was like him when he was younger.
He said that he would believe in Naruto, and prepared to use a technique. Upon using the technique, Nagato used his Outer Path to release all the souls that had been captured, and used it to also revive those who had died, including Kakashi, Fukasaku and Shizune. Nagato then entrusted his will to Naruto, and passed away. Konan decided to leave the Akatsuki, and took both Nagato and Yahiko's bodies, telling Naruto that she would believe in him. She then used her paper to create a bouquet of flowers as a sign of peace, and gave them to Naruto.
Naruto erected a shrine in the forest in honour of his sensei and started to make his way back to the ruins of Konoha. He almost succumbed to exhaustion, but was caught by a newly revived Kakashi, who carried Naruto on his back to the border of the village. Awaiting them were his friends and companions. As the villagers congratulated Naruto, Ebisu and Iruka thought about how their opinion of Naruto had undergone an immense change over the years; he was once considered a nuisance and a demon, but as his deeds were recognised he became a true hero through the eyes of many.
Naruto's ultimate dream of acknowledgement had come true at last. In the anime, this takes place during this arc, but in the manga it takes place during the Five Kage Summit. Tsunade was left in a comatose state after using all of her chakra to protect the villagers. If there's something that fans love about Naruto Uzumaki, it's his late entrances into fights.
From his late save to protect Inari, to him kicking away Madara's Gudoudama during the 4th Great Ninja War, Naruto has come in clutch several times. The Pain arc can, arguably, be called the very peak of that as Naruto entered the fight long after Pain had already blown up the village.
After Sakura Haruno screamed for help, Naruto was reverse-summoned by Shima to save the day. Hinata Hyuga is one of the few characters who barely got any time to shine in the Naruto series, however, during the Pain arc, she was one of the most important characters and Naruto's victory would probably not have come had it not been for her.
After being severely injured by Pain, Naruto went berserk and unleashed the power of the Nine-Tails, which eventually helped him defeat the Akatsuki leader. Pain's Invasion arc also became the very first arc where the power of the Nine-tailed Beast was properly shown to the fans. As Naruto went berserk, he kept getting stronger with each passing moment. Even a sealing jutsu as powerful as Chibaku Tensei wasn't good enough to stop this majestic power and it pushed Pain beyond all his limits.
Up until this point in the story, Minato's true identity was a big secret and Naruto barely had any idea as to who the Fourth Hokage really was. Having incorporated some of his chakra into the Eight Trigrams Seal, Minato was able to meet Naruto and tell him that he was, in fact, his father. At the same time, the real threat of the Akatsuki was found out to be the Masked Man, and finally, thanks to help from his father, Naruto was able to compose himself and defeat Pain once and for all.

In unison with the village's destruction, she summoned Naruto, Gamabunta , Gamaken , Gamahiro , Gamakichi , and Fukasaku to the village's centre. When the dust cleared, Pain and his six bodies the Asura Path having been restored by the Naraka Path , gathered to face Naruto. Before they fought, however, a weakened Tsunade angrily vowed to make Pain pay for destroying Konoha.
When Asura Path attacked Tsunade, Naruto quickly defeated him in one blow. After discovering that Kakashi had been killed, Naruto instructed the rest of the villagers not to interfere with the fight, knowing that it would be hard to fight and protect them simultaneously.
While the Deva Path 's abilities were recovering from its massive attack, Naruto used his new senjutsu techniques to defeat the other five bodies. Before he could begin fighting the Deva Path, its powers returned. He got rid of Naruto's toad allies and captured him, rendering him immobile with its black receivers. Naruto, in a fit of rage, erupted into his six-tailed transformation.
With the transformation, Naruto gave in to the Nine-Tails' animal instincts in return for power and liberated himself from the Deva Path's black receivers. After charging a Tailed Beast Ball , Pain diverted Naruto's attack, causing another massive explosion to shake Konoha.
Needing more chakra to face Naruto's new form, the Deva Path moved to a location closer to Konan and Nagato , Pain's true body. Naruto pursued him, finally giving the village a chance to regroup and tend to the wounded. After getting close enough to Nagato, the Deva Path performed Chibaku Tensei , nearly capturing Naruto in a large, floating sphere of earth. This pushed him into the eight-tailed transformation eventually breaking out of the trap.
After delving into his mind and having the Nine-Tails resealed, Naruto exited the transformation and prepared to face the Deva Path again.
Knowing that its abilities needed 5 seconds to recharge, Naruto used an elaborate array of backup plans to eventually defeat the final path with a Rasengan to the chest. After winning the battle, Naruto went to meet with Nagato. A sceptical Nagato berated Naruto for trying to stop his plans for peace, despite not even having an alternative plan. Upon hearing Nagato's story and realising how hatred gave birth to Pain, Naruto decided to have faith in their master 's teachings and not kill Nagato.
Nagato, believing that Naruto would be able to find peace, revived all the people killed during the invasion, sacrificing his own life to do so. With the villagers revived by Nagato's technique, Konan , having lost the only person left she cared about, decided to leave the Akatsuki. She also promised that Amegakure would help Naruto achieve his and Nagato's vision of peace. Though their ninja force was revived, the village itself was left in ruin.
How the neighbouring countries reacted to this attack is unknown. After exerting all her chakra to defend the village, Tsunade was left in a comatose state.
Naruto, on the other hand, was finally acknowledged as a hero overwhelmingly by the previously hostile villagers. This enlightening battle helped Naruto learn of some of his lineage, along with the experience of loss Sasuke stated he knew nothing of, and would spur Naruto on to find peace. His first act as the acting leader was to have Sasuke Uchiha classified as a missing-nin and marked for assassination.
